Magination Press, the children's book imprint of the American Psychological Association (APA), has published a book written to help children cope when their parent has to travel. The Magic Box: When Parents Can't Be There to Tuck You In is a colorful, illustrated storybook for children ages 3 - 7 that helps them understand and cope with their feelings during their parent's temporary absence. The book also includes a "Note to Parents," written by clinical psychologist Ann Rasmussen, PsyD, that provides parents with several techniques and strategies to help their children prepare for parental absences.
Authors Marty Sederman and clinical psychologist Seymour Epstein, PhD, tell the story of Casey whose father has to leave home on business. Casey's father leaves him with a special gift called "The Magic Box" that helps Casey cope with the troubling feelings caused by their separation.
Coauthor Sederman explains that The Magic Box illustrates how to provide a child with a meaningful and "concrete expression of love from the absent parent" that directly addresses "the sadness that results from a parent's absence." She also explains that the idea of a magic box can be more effective than a phone call, which can sometimes intensify a child's feelings of unhappiness and undermine his or her efforts to cope.
Marty Sederman - a market research consultant and mother of two - has used a magic box to help her own children when their father was away on frequent business trips. Seymour Epstein, PhD, is Marty Sederman's father and a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Massachusetts.
