The Boy on Fairfield Street:
How Ted Geisel Grew Up to Become Dr. Seuss
by Kathleen Krull, Paintings by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher
Children around the world have grown up reading and listening to
the beloved books of Dr. Seuss. Now those same children
will learn how a kid just like them, later became the world
famous storyteller in The
Boy On Fairfield Street: How Ted Geisel Grew Up to Become
Dr. Seuss by Kathleen Krull. This fascinating picture
book biography focuses on the childhood of Ted Geisel, bringing
young readers into his world of passion that would lead
to his extraordinary life and career.
At 74
Fairfield Street in Springfield, Massachusetts a funny young
boy named Ted Geisel lived with his family. He enjoyed reading
and drawing, zoo animals and doodling, and most of all fooling
around! Ted had many friends in the neighborhood and the
boys would spend hours testing each other and goofing around.
His favorite pastime however, was drawing; sometimes even
sketching on his bedroom walls with crayons! Ted always
had an unusual way of looking at things and often expressed
them in his art. Finally at age twenty-two, Ted realized
he could make a living with his art and the funny way he
saw the world.
From
the book:
"Certainly,
no one he knew seemed to like drawing as much as he did.
Sometimes he even drew on his bedroom walls with his crayons.
Everyone was horrified except for his mother.
He
drew the animals he saw in his father's zoo, he drew imaginary
creatures, he drew whatever popped into his head.
Like
his friends, he adored Krazy Kat and other comic strips.
Ted would run up to the corner each night to greet his
father-- then grab the comics page from his father's
newspaper."
Kathleen
Krull's lively text brings Ted Geisel's childhood to life.
A brief section at the back of the book highlights the milestones
of his adult years, creating the fullest picture of Dr.
Seuss's incredible life.
